MeteoSwiss and CSCS win Swiss ICT award 2016
This year’s award of the Swiss Information and Communication Technology (ICT) goes to the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre CSCS for the development of new software and hardware: the high-resolution weather forecast model COSMO-1 and the ensemble system COSMO-E of MeteoSwiss running on a hybrid machine Piz Kesch at CSCS.
By using graphical processing units (GPUs) and an optimized software for GPUs, the COSMO model not only becomes significantly faster, but also much more energy efficient resulting in a multiplication of computing capacity at equal costs. Meteorologists, researchers and industry have developed a new generation of interdepartmental hard and software that the jury believes will make MeteoSwiss a global pioneer in high-resolution weather models.
The work honoured is based on several years of extensive collaboration between MeteoSwiss, CSCS, ETH Zurich, and C2SM. For more details, please visit the MeteoSwiss website.
