Reorganisation at MeteoSwiss

The Divisions Numerical Prediction and Climate at MeteoSwiss have adapted their organizational structure. Check out who now heads the teams in the Numerical Prediction and Climate Divisions.

After C2SM member Oliver Fuhrer left, there are now, i.e. since the beginning of May, two new team leaders in the Division Numerical Prediction at MeteoSwiss.

Since then, the Division Numerical Prediction (Division Head, Philippe Steiner) consists of two teams:

  • Numerical Prediction, Development (APND), Head Marco Arpagaus
APND is responsible for the meteorological (further) development of the numerical weather forecasting systems of MeteoSwiss. This covers the COSMO models, in future ICON, dispersion and trajectory calculations, pollen forecasts and the verification activities of APN. APND makes a significant contribution to the internal projects for the development of new model versions.
  • Numerical Prediction, Computing (APNC), Head Xavier Lapillonne and Carlos Osuna as Co-leader
APNC is responsible for the technical (further) development of the numerical weather forecasting systems of MeteoSwiss. This covers the adaptation of the models to the state-of-the-art architectures of high performance computers (e.g. with GPUs), the further development of the requisite software infrastructure with partners, user support and also the COSMO Consortium. In addition, the further development and use of the post-processing tool Fieldextra is part of APNC’s tasks.

The "Climate" division (Division Head, Mischa Croci-Maspoli) now consists of three teams. In addition, the office of the National Center for Climate Services (NCCS) is affiliated to the Climate Division.

  • Climate Monitoring (APKM), Head Cornelia Schwierz
APKM ensures professional climate communication, prepares regular climate reports and expertise and manages projects in the field of climate monitoring. Coordination is also ensured with the regional centers in Locarno, Geneva and Payerne. APKM is also responsible for the operation and development of the Climate Analyses Tools (CATs), which ensure regular, sustainable and coordinated climate analyses.
  • Climate Basics (APKG), Head Reto Stöckli
APKG develops climatological foundations for extreme value statistics and spatial analyses. With data homogenization and satellite climatology, APKG provides additional basic information. The team also provides climatological information on pollen and phenology.
  • Climate Evolution (APKE), Head Sven Kotlarski
APKE deals with current and future climate change in Switzerland and in the enlarged Alpine region. In close cooperation with APKG and APKM the team is is responsible for the process-related description and analysis of past climate developments and for the continuous further development of national climate scenarios. Close cooperation is maintained with the C2SM and other national and international research institutions. Together with the National Centre for Climate Services (NCCS), the team continues to design the interface between climate projections and climate services.
